In September 2001, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts opened its doors. This high school offers a specialized program in the arts, as well as, a competitive academic curriculum. There are approximately 800 students selected from 8th & 9th graders who are residents of New York City. The permanent site for the shool opened in September 2009 near Kaufman Studios and across the street from the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. The state-of-the-art-facility, includes the 800-seat Tony Bennett Concert Hall, black box theatres, dance studios, art studios, vocal and instrumental studios, with recording and practice rooms, as well as, a film studio with editing suites. This site will offer students an opportunity to study a sequential competitive arts curriculum in one of six majors. Selection is based on a competitive audition and evaluation of academic records.

VOCAL - Vocal students perform in the FSSA Concert Choir or Chorale, Musical Theatre, Opera Workshop and participate in the annual Cabaret. Curriculum includes voice training, music theory, sight singing, diction and audition preparation.
Audition Requirements: Perform the Star Spangled Banner (accompaniment will be provided) and one minute of a standard musical theatre piece or a classical piece. Bring sheet music in your key.
DRAMA - A four-year course of study that includes acting technique, theatre speech, playwriting and Shakespeare.
Auditon Requirements: You will be required to make a presentation of two memorized, contrasting, one-minute monologues that must be from published plays. No internet or original material will be accepted. You will also be asked to do a cold reading from selected scenes.
FILM & MEDIA - Core curriculum includes an intensive study of film and media arts, including production, history, and the development of assessment skills. Courses of study include video production, film theory, history, industry practices and legal issues. Students will have access to state-of-the-art digital technology and a number of cultural institutions.
Audition Requirements: Students will present ten images on poster board that tell a story without words. Students will also be given a visual representation and asked to develop an original story that could be the basis for a film. Five basic questions should be addressed. What is the story about? Who are the main characters? What are the conflicts? What type of film is it? How does the film end? All materials will be provided at the audition.
FINE ARTS - Core curriculum includes an intensive study of art, including production, history, development of self and assessment skills. Courses of study include drawing, painting, ceramics, 3D Design, graphic design, communication arts, print making and photography; program is enriched by musuem and gallery visits and partnerships with cultural institutions.
Audition Requirements: Present a portfolio with 10-15 pieces of original work created from observation and from students own imagination, with diversity of subject matter and use of media, including examples of line, value and color.
DANCE - Core Curriculum includes ballet and modern dance enriched by master classes and workshops in other dance forms (tap, jazz, ethnic). Courses of study include dance history, choreography, dance criticism and anatomy/kinesiology. Students will attend live performances and take part in school productions.
Audition Requirments: Groups of 20-25 students will do a brief ballet barre, center and execute a number of modern movement combinations and jumps; emphasis is on body alignment, correct execution of steps, coordination, and musicality. Proper attire is required: ballet slippers, tights, and leotards, t-shirts for boys.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC - Core curriculum includes group instruction on all orchestral instruments; program features orchestra, intermediate and advance band, jazz ensemble, advanced students participate in chamber music and ensembles.
Auditions Requirements: Perform at least one selection and two major scales. Take a sightreading test and rhythmic comprehension test in which you are required to tap back rhythmic patterns. Bring your own instrument (except piano, tuba, double bass, percussion instruments, guitar amplifiers), as well as, two copies of your auditon music).
